Why do Recipes not Always Work?

How come that even if I precisely follow instructions, it does not always work as it is supposed to? Let's say I buy a book on how to start an online business and make it a success for 3 months, I do exactly what it says to, and yet, three months passed and I still do not make enough even to pay for hosting.

Recently I have met a friend with whom I have lost contact since the University years. I have always perceived Nick (lets call him this way here) as a very successful person. He easily passed all exams regardless of his actual knowledge of material or attendance, professors and tutors loved him and cited him as an example for other students. No one doubted in Nick's successful career after the University. That is why I was astonished when after being asked, if he was an owner of an international company already, he answered that he feels himself as an absolute looser.
